Zen Garden
Expanding the Zen Garden on the site.
I have been discovering hidden Zen gardens in my meandering of America. To discover for a Taoist, at least for myself: a Zen garden is always centered in my heart. So I ask of others, where have you wandered across a moment of Zen: a place you have to your surprise discovered a Zen garden in the lines of movement within your own life?

Hey Casey,
what exactly is a Zen Garden? If I know what it is, I can tell you if I came across one
I decided to expand the definition of a zen garden to be any place which inspires a state of mind into insight or peace.
so many hidden zen gardens to meander unbidden into
I will think about it and when I come across one, I’ll let you know
Awesome! I have a few places like this across the world, never thought about them this way. It’s very comforting.
@Jeff:
so many place are gardens of our soul, we find them in surprising moments and we forever hold them as special as a result.
I read this, stood up and walked to the hotel window. Looking out on downtown Atlanta my eye tracked along the concrete, brick, glass, and steel. It’s beautiful in its own way, but ultimately my eye was drawn to the swaying branches of three tall trees springing from their holes in the sidewalk. Nature moving, breathing, and singing in the heart of the city. My Zen garden for the day. Thank you for sharing, Casey.
@Ric: it is pretty amazing isn’t it?
When you see those lines of life and how they connect out, beyond what is visible and yet in flow: you feel and sense it completely. That truly is seeing the world as a zen garden.
On a camping trip out into the forest with some friends, I wandered off at some point in the weekend. After walking for a while, I came upon a gigantic tree with multiple branches fallen to the ground, but still connected to the tree as if they were bridges. The whole thing was covered in moss and other little life forms. In that moment, I realized that the death of this giant had made way for other life. And someday those plants living upon the tree would decompose and provide energy for more life still. Someday, that tree will be gone. The spot itself may be at the top of a mountain, or the bottom of a river, but it will still be the same.
Beautiful Bethany! thanks for sharing the moment so we could all take a moment to be elsewhere.
