In English there is the saying: “to be of two minds”. This means to be unable to decide about something.
But what if we were of four minds? What would that mean?
The mind is complex and we actually have multiple processing centers within our body. Also our mind is layered to act as multiple minds but then it merges all the layers together to only look like one mind again. So the topic of how we think and the way our minds work is more complicated than people consider.
Our Four Minds
In terms of teaching. I often teach we are of four minds. This is more important than a person might realize. In Awakening Dragon Taoism we teach to recognize the different minds in action by paying attention to which mind is doing the talking. The reason why is simple: it gives us additional information, that expands our awareness, allowing us to navigate more gracefully in life. For instance: if our thoughts are coming from our stomach mind, it means pay attention! The stomach mind is telling you that possibly something important for your survival could be happening. Then you would look at the situation with a slightly different eye than if you felt the thoughts were coming from the heart mind which only talks about connections that could help you grow.
Often times we are of two minds because the different minds are speaking up internally pointing out different truths. Knowing this helps us sort out harder choices we need to make when we are of two minds. Learning how to sort and weed out our instinctual responses are also important in a society where marketing uses our instincts against us to sell products.
So explore not only your story but expand your minds to navigate your stories more gracefully.
One correction to the video, our main brain has 100 billion neurons not a trillion. Oh the tricky mind always trying to over inflate itself. (There are however, a 100 trillion interconnection between those neurons.)
