Casey teaches Awakening Dragon Taoism. Our school focuses upon the core details of Taoism taught with contemporary language. Julie teaches shamanic meditation and movement exercises. Together we offer this unique Taoist retreat that will help find you answers as you begin to explore life from a Taoist perspective.
Our Taoist retreats are one on one sessions, taught in a traditional Taoist manner of a teacher directly to a student.
The path of awakening dragon opens inner teachings of Taoism thousands of years old, while expanding upon the best aspects of living in the here and now. Take this journey to discover your potential as you learn to move more gracefully with the world around you.
A Taoist retreat opens a person to flow like a river, relaxed and full of loving wisdom. The practice opens a person to ecstasy, surprise, and an insight into their unique soul. Qi Gong opens the body to become a movement mandala, and your spirit and essence become illuminated by the motion of your life.
This Taoist path follows the yin-yang as a symbol representing the dualities of life. Your retreat will be a playful experience with dualities such as masculine and feminine, fast and slow, light and dark, open and closed, big and small, willfulness and willingness, gravity and flight, movement and stillness. We reveal the dualities in your life, to help you rebalance life and find your personal baseline.
We will help you practice being relaxed & alert in the rapids as well as enjoying the free-fall of the waterfalls in life. You will be able to focus upon the tools that work best for you and open into the mystery of life as the river merges into the ocean. This Taoist retreat uses the river metaphor to help you connect to inherent inner wisdom we all possess.
A Taoist retreat begins with the physical body to cultivate stability. The practice infuses the body with energy by slowly increasing the tempo of the beat and hence our movement. As the tempo increases, energy revitalizes the body and opens the heart to experiencing emotions fluidly. Finally, we invite the spirit into the energy mix that is filling our bodies. This is where our retreat allows for effortless practice of flexibility in the mind.
These retreats start every day with teaching Qi Gong. Then between the movement sessions, we take time to teach Taoist practices and how to apply Taoism to your own life. This retreat is a series of movement lessons to teach how to live your life with deeper grace in your motions. Taoism has had several millennia to help develop deep and powerful methods to help people re-connect with their inner truths. This retreat is an opportunity to move back into your life with compassion and rich embrace of the best of what we each offer to the world.
It is dangerous to keep
the hips still and the sacrum stiff
for the heart suffocates
I Ching – Chinese Proverb
Julie and I are working together, merging modern lifestyles with older Taoist practice. It’s been a meandering process, not with intentions, but occurring from sharing the love of life.
So we were talking about last night. Julie asks: “What is Chaos’s expression in Nature?”
It was interesting since that question opened an intuitive vision. One aspect of being a Taoist teacher is that you learn to trust intuition as it occurs. It’s a strange experience in that the experience overlaps one’s senses and yet it is also a very distinct sense onto its own.
So from this, the response came back immediately: It’s the basis and final form of true individuality.
In the fractal pattern of life: We start as a seed pattern. However the final shape, the final form is unique to each one of us. For example: just as fingerprints are unique even to twins. A fingerprint is defined by the initial fractal pattern seed (Yin) combining the random interactions of growth (Yang) within the womb end up producing each final fingerprint to be unique.
Without Chaos, we would each be just simply organic computers without a defined sense of true self.
We are a fire engaged in a dance of life and the peak of our experience, is also the peak of our individuality. In this, is part of the reason why the hardest times of life are often remembered as the best times of life. Our motion thru these hard times ties into the shaping of our ultimate expression of what we are. The hard times are also when we can be most strong in our individuality.
A Taoist always embraces individuality fully; every moment is lived fully and in that is the chaos of why people have such a hard time following a Taoist Master in their course. To learn how to face the Chaos and then live fully, while flirting with a sense of order to maintain balance.
Taoism as a practice is truly a wonderful expression for your individuality!

Most importantly, a Taoist retreat is actually a guided exploration in learning how to live a more complete life. Taoism as a practice teaches people how to explore and sense potential. The ability to read potential has many names across many cultures. However, the end result of expressing potential is always a statement of who you are as a person. This means our Taoist retreats are all about helping you see and then work against every option and challenge around you. In this you will grow and become more graceful as a person, more your own person. These educational retreats will help you both develop and learn to appreciate the beauty of your own natural gifts. Take the time in this retreat to explore the world with extra clarity. It isn’t about learning some secret, rather this is about learning to be complete with your own natural abilities to read, understand and move with your potential!
Western Culture tries to force learning to be external to a person. A modern person is forced and shaped relative to outside culture & knowledge. This Taoist retreat is the opposite approach of learning. When you come here on a Personal Tao retreat, you will be learning internally to be a stronger person and then flow more gracefully around external forces trying to limit you.
This means we use your life itself for the baseline of the teaching and then apply a balanced mix of Taoist practices (meditation, exercise, awareness principles) to keep you grounded while exploring all the options ahead of you in life. This is very critical as each student in our retreats will learn tools that will help them hold a very practical and flexible outlook in their life. You will leave our retreat with a deeper strength and discover how to move with more grace in your life. Potential represents what “might be”. So this Taoist retreat will be a time to finally take a look at all your options and then set into motion the actions that will focus / move you into the life you actively dream as yours.
Depending on your needs, you can customize the length of time to match your life situation. A Taoist retreat can be as short as a day or you can extend it over several weeks. Generally people come for five to seven day retreats. Our Taoist retreats are open to everyone.
The cost of the retreat is always a reasonable time for time rate.
Our main retreat location is in Hilo Hawaii on the Wailuku river.
