The third eye is our ability to see what might be, to see potential.
Everyone has access to his or her third eye. For example, when you have a hunch and act on it, you’ve used your third eye. But that’s only the beginning. Your third eye is a sense, one you can develop to be more refined and accurate than just being a hunch.
What is the Third Eye?
The third eye is the pineal gland. While the pineal gland might be the focal point for the sixth sense, the third eye is actually much more than just training yourself to connect to the pineal gland.
The Third Eye is a natural part of every person. One way to think of it is as a “meta” organ that consists of your mind and all of your senses working together as a larger, more powerful sensory organ that the pineal gland then acts as a focal point to create a vision. The Third Eye is a very clever bit of natural evolution that allows you to see the patterns in your life. Even more amazing, your third eye can reveal these patterns to you by overlaying this information on top of your other senses.
As a sense, your third eye can be used in many different ways. Seers use their third eye to understand hidden connections and answer questions. Energy workers ‘feel’ the energies around them and to then consciously manipulate that energy. And every time you have empathy, you are using your third eye to touch and feel the emotions of others. Many other examples exist for how people use the Third Eye.
One outside resource to consider is this book: Third Eye: Third Eye, Mind Power, Intuition & Psychic Awareness: Spiritual Enlightenment
Seeing with the Third Eye
To understand how the third eye works, let’s look at how it is possible to use the Third Eye to sense and visually interpret energy around us. It’s possible to see Motion (for example a car moving), Activity (you driving the car) and Exchange of Energy (burning the gas). Add in our capacity of sensing & projecting potential (being able to predict where the car goes based on the roads and knowing the driver), in other words seeing where energy, motion, and activities will flow to over time. Add all this together into an internal visual map, and you have just expanded how you see Energy playing out (the results of using the car/gasoline/intention to drive you up the hill). By seeing energy as a mental overlay rather than just an abstract concept, it becomes a tangible property of life that we can learn how to sense and interact within a deeper manner.
Is it possible to really ‘see’ energy? Not directly. While our eyes can see the results of energy in action, seeing energy directly is another thing altogether. Our eyes only ‘see’ what they are designed to see, light. What our third eye does is process information and then overlay that information over our other senses in such a way we can then interpret and interact with energy in a more precise manner. In this way, we can understand where the energy is, and we can ‘see’ it.
This makes sense, if you think about it. The mind has figured something out and wants to tell us. The easiest way for it to do this is to use what it already has access to: our five normal senses.
This can appear as a mystical power being able to “see” or “predict” processes, events, potentials which are not physically present. But it’s a very real and tangible skill.
Because so much depends on your ability to interpret results, there is a lot of room for mistranslation between the “facts” and what your third eye returns to you. Also, because each of us sees things differently, it can be problematic to share what we see with others. For example, when we hear the word ‘cup’, each of us may visualize a completely different cup. What one person will sense is different from another.
Of course, commonalities exist. We are human and our form, our nature help push us towards common baselines of experience. However, the unique nature of each person also ensures that each of us sees the world from a different angle.
It shouldn’t be surprising, then, that there are so many different mystical practices to explore all the different perceptions of the world we hold.
Lets use Aura’s as an example.
Consider a person who sees auras or light. Auras are in fact such an information overlay. Your brain has the ability to process visual information, but the image it creates for you is not limited to what comes from your eyes. Consider what you see on this page as you read it. You aren’t seeing black lines. You are seeing words and then concepts and ideas overlaid on top of them.
Now envision yourself looking at another person. You don’t just see what he or she is wearing. Your whole neural network, mind and sense organs form a larger more sensitive antenna that picks up on energy and patterns before you. There are so many clues in front of you that tell you about the person’s emotional state, well-being, level of distraction, and so many other factors. Your third eye has a lot to share with you and so it puts this information into what you see by adding an aura. In reality what you are seeing is slightly different over what is happening: but your mind is always altering your experience to give you extra information to work with. If you look at the scientific research you will discover the mind is constantly editing our perception. So the third eye uses this natural mental capacity to alter our perception to add in extra data more than we realize.
Seeing auras or energy can appear as a mystical power, depending upon a person’s level of skill. But it is just that: a very real and tangible skill, one that can be taught. A person can even be taught how to view auras in a standard way.
Reaching Out with My Sixth Sense
People make a mistake to think that the third eye is an active process. In fact, a common question is:
“What does the Third Eye DO?”
The third eye is a sense. Senses do nothing directly other than relay information to you.
What do your eyes actively do? Nothing, you can’t shoot lasers or heat vision from your eyes. Your eyes instead return visual information.
What does your hearing actively do? Nothing, you don’t consciously create noise out from your ears. Your ears instead return auditory information.
The third eye is a sense. It returns information about potentials and energetic state. Potentials represent what might be, and Energetic state is about how something is being held.
The action, or DO is how you use the information you gain from your senses.
So many people if they only listen and then acted upon what they heard, wouldn’t get into so much trouble. Likewise in vision, so many people don’t truly “look” and miss opportunities as they rush past things.
The third eye is a sense, it returns information on what might be and also energetic states. With it you can sense another person’s emotions: that’s empathy. The third eye you can let you feel how a person is doing. It can show you how a person’s life story is flowing. With the third eye, you can get inklings of what might be ahead, behind or out of sight.

Your Third Eye Could Already Be Open.
Many times the trick isn’t opening the third eye but to recognize we see more than we realize. For many people, it’s already open (most people only squint through the third eye). The real problem is most people unconsciously ignore it all together. For others, it’s something to fear so many people actively look away when it is trying to show you something.
Opening the third eye means practicing using your sixth sense. The trick is learning how to accept it is there and then interpret what you are sensing over time. The bigger problem is all too many people force the process and then get overwhelmed by stories, yes stories! More interestingly, the third eye is the only sense that shows us stories. We are human, to be human is to live with our stories, we do have senses to navigate those stories. The sixth sense is our prime sense we use to follow a story and predict where a story is going towards.
Because we use stories to create a map of how to navigate the world, Our mind creates mental stories for us in the form of visions that the third eye stirs up to use as mini maps. In part to get in touch with the third eye is to become a storyteller, to see a story and then use it to help move more gracefully in life.
Most people either don’t listen to their third eye, so they work a bit harder to move thru life. Or all too many people over embellish and then make the third eye story larger than life, which doesn’t help a person much either.
While people can sense energetic manifestations, potential never leaves behind direct physical representations. It’s no different than seeing Jesus in a slice of toast. Jesus is not in the toast; rather the brain is interpreting the toast in a Jesus like fashion OR are often man-made artifacts. The biggest trap in training your sixth sense is to self-create and add in artifacts to information being relayed back by the third eye and then accidentally tricking ourselves into believing something beyond what we were sensing.
Opening the Third Eye
Because the third eye doesn’t often map to concrete physical artifacts, it’s all too easy to deny it and then let it languish to fade away.
So what you can do with the third eye depends on you.
It all hinges on
(1) How you first decide to pay attention to what it’s connecting to
(2) Learn to interpret what you sense.
(3) Finally act upon what you are connecting to.
Taoist and Shamanic practices have developed extensive training techniques for using and working with your third eye. It’s a real sense, but it’s a “meta” sense, and it must be “used and tuned” to be developed fully. It isn’t something that just works out of the box from birth.
A great way to start using and tuning this sense is to connect to a power animal or learn shamanic journeying. A shamanic practitioner can assist you through a power animal retrieval or by guiding you on a shamanic journey.
As a Taoist, I have been developing my third eye since I was five years old and had my first vision. When I shared my first vision with others, I discover immediately that most people don’t see the world in this fashion. Unfortunately, I was also persecuted by others. Being so young, I quickly learned to keep my ability to myself and explore it silently and patiently on my own terms. I have spent more than 40 years exploring my third eye, reviewing materials and using my background in both Taoism and the sciences to understand it. During this time, I have developed a way to describe the third eye in terms that are acceptable to most everyone. So hence, I am now sharing it in my teachings.
Many people naturally suppress this ability, often to prevent others from making fun of them or labeling them as crazy. And, with enough suppression, any ability withers and goes away. You must use your third eye for it work. Also, how you use it shapes what it will be able to sense.
For all of these reasons and others, the Third Eye remains a mysterious ability.
Different cultures use many varied techniques to develop this skill. Taoists, for example, are very patient, taking decades to define and refine this ability to help them become a Sage / Seer with the extra information they can see. The nature of the interpretive aspects of this ability means experience helps improve its capabilities and accuracy. As a consequence, it is a slow process to master.
5 Lessons for Opening the Third Eye
Overall the first step is patience, awareness, and practice. It’s best to work with Yoga, Qi Gong, Meditation, Dance or Tai Chi for a few years to just practice sensing your body and mind. Each of these practices will help begin hooking your mind and body closer together with spirit. Spirit represents the movement of your life. Seeing how movement stirs up potential is all part of learning how to use your third eye. Each of these practices will help a person begin to connect to the third eye. At first, you don’t do anything other than accept the occasional vision you may have. You practice sensing your body; you practice feeling your energetic state, you get in better shape to remove extraneous physical distractions of poorer health.
Pause. That’s right the first step to learning how to use the third eye is simply to pause. You cannot listen to your heart if you cannot pause. The third eye requires centering and patience. Without pause, you will not truly connect to any deeper third eye experience. Yes, you may have visions or have intuitive hints, but you will miss most of the full experience without pausing into your heart.
Don’t make a vision bigger than life. All too many people blow out of proportion a vision they experience. Be Calm!
Practice just watching life flow around you. The third eye reveals patterns of the world unfolding around you. As a result, the more you understand the patterns of nature, the easier it is to understand what a vision can represent.
We can spot Trends, and often our mind will clue us into a trend with simple insights and flashes of inspiration. So many third eye experiences can just represent a simple pattern unfolding. To force a vision to mean more than it does will sidetrack a person from the simple pattern you just saw being revealed.
So keep the interpretations as simple as possible and then grow out expanding the meaning as you get better at interpreting your third eye experiences.
Back to Pause.
You pause when receiving an intuition. The third eye isn’t using the logical thinking part of the mind. As a result, if you begin to think the moment you get a vision it disrupts the third eye process. So you pause to stop the rest of your mind from ruining the third eye moment.
The third eye is a beautiful sense; it expands how a person connects to the world, adds another dimension to how we connect to everything. But it’s only one of many senses. People tend to focus a bit too much only on one sense, and that limits a person quite a bit then. So you have to be patient and learn to use all of the senses together, or you are missing the larger world.
After you get a vision with the third eye you check all your other senses, even use your logic, you poke about and add in other pieces of information to create an even more complete picture if possible.
When your other senses return contradictory information, then you slow down. Remember to allow your intuition to tell you when to slow down to pause and look again at everything around you. If other information extends and validates what you sense, then you move ahead with a bit more surety.

The terms opening the third eye and closing the third eye aren’t technically correct.
The third eye is a natural sense we all possess. The third eye is a sense to detect “what might be” or our sense of potential. To open the third eye means to further develop that sense to the point of being aware and conscious of the sense.
Once the third eye is opened, it doesn’t come with an eyelid that we can just shut. It’s more like our ear, always on. The problem is this: some people get overwhelmed by their senses.
For example, PTSD is an excellent example of an ailment for a person overly sensitized to information their senses provides to them. Some people can be traumatized by seeing too much!
Learning how to “close the third eye” is learning how to either manage the third eye sense and how to ignore it once again.
If you want to close your third eye, then one approach you can take is making your life mundane, predictable and mainstream. Let’s face it modern culture does an amazing job of shutting people’s vision of potential down. People are too busy trying to consume other people’s vision.
You can choose not to listen.
For example: just because people can hear, doesn’t mean most people listen! Likewise you can teach yourself to ignore your own visions and your mind will just learn automatically skip past the visions.
If you don’t listen to the third eye, the lack of use itself dampens down the third eye.
Judgment is the opposite of potential, and it always will shut down the third eye.
If you don’t want the third eye: then judge it as being impossible or talk to enough people who don’t believe in it. Facing and accepting other people’s judgement will quickly limit you and the third eye will go away quickly in response.
The Third Eye and Energy Work
How do I use the third eye to work with energy?
A brief overview is that you use the third eye in energy work to perceive energy. However to modify energy is another set of processes. You can use breath, motion and other active processes to shape energy. Qi Gong is perfect examples of this, where you use breath to work with your Chi / Qi or in Kundalini Yoga where you use chanting to work with Kundalini energy.
There are many other active techniques to work and modify energy, but I will stress that the third eye is the sense used to visualize that energy. We work with energy with actions and our sixth sense helps us guide those actions.
Teaching the Third Eye
Julie and I teach others how to access the third eye, but be aware this ability isn’t rushed but rather grown into over time. Julie and I will teach you how to grow patiently and fully into this skill.
If you are interested in learning more the best place to start would be in a experiential manner. We would either assist you through a power animal retrieval or by guiding you on a shamanic journey. Each of these experiences would be a path of directly using the third eye to connect to the spiritual side of life. Spirit represents the motion and connections to everything around us.
